Corporates Find iOS Devices The Most Secure For Executing BYOD

The most obvious signs of the blurring of the boundaries of personal and professional life can be noticed in the manner in which the concept of Bring Your Own Device ( BYOD ) is getting accepted spreading thick and fast. No more are people required to work from their office premises always; irrespective of the nature of the job. Given the 24x7 accessibility, the whole concept of office hours seems to be a thing of the past. It has become quite normal for people to work for extended hours at the convenience of choosing their place of operation. Equipped with Laptops, Smartphones, Tablets & the more recent Phablets, accessing enterprise network is just about possible from anywhere and at any time of the day. Infact with every passing the day, these tools are only getting better. BYOD has brought in a considerable amount of increase in the productivity of the workforce. They have been empowered to deliver work from anywhere , anytime & most importantly from the device of their choice. This has led to a lot of companies promoting the concept of having a workforce on the move. Besides the degree of convenience and flexibility which it has brought in, the companies have also gained in terms of reduced costs in having to maintain/build/ rent real estate. The main concern, from an organization’s perspective, is in ensuring safe integration of these devices & have policies in place so as to reduce chances of valuable data getting compromised in any capacity. Setting the right BYOD approach and the policy is the key to maintain data security, control costs & minimize risk.

Apple’s iOS platform seems to be the hot favorite when it comes to popularity of devices being preferred by professionals. For one, it is more secure than its nearest competitor – Android . From its App store to the regular security updates, the devices have almost earned the title of being the most reliable and impregnable & hence an ideal fit for enterprise deployment. To elaborate a bit more on this, there are many security features which are available by default for e.g. all the 3rd party apps are sandboxed to ensure that they cannot access files stored by other apps or modify them in any capacity . This is generally the case in the event of a malware or a virus attack. Also, each of the apps available in the store is reviewed to check whether it works as it is advertised and has no malicious code in it. The data protection provision helps in ensuring that even in the event of a device getting compromised, the data stays encrypted. This has been made possible because of steps taken by Apple to not only encrypt data during transmission but also implement hardware level encryption of data stored in the deice. Each of the app has its executable code signed in order to be sure about the source with the built-in ones signed by Apple. Companies interested in building customized iPhone apps have to join the iOS Developer Enterprise Program which gives them the provision to run their apps on the devices they authorize. To buy more confidence from the organizations, Apple has made it possible to allow IT departments , through Mobile Device Management provision, to update settings of their enrolled devices as per their requirements & to remotely wipe of lock them if need be.

Inclination by corporates towards iOS devices getting used by their employees provides a lot of opportunity for the developer community. The demand of enterprise apps has been on the rise. This also offers an excellent opportunity for people with brilliant app ideas. This is where Mindfire Solutions , with its team of dedicated & certified iPad /

Why Should You Divert Your Marketing Dollars Towards App Development?

Going by some of the recent reports, Apple is believed to have cut down on its iPhone 5 component orders. Is it some sort of an indication that the demand has not as strong as was expected? Well one way to look at it could be that it is correction to the orders placed earlier which were made keeping in mind the holiday season and the likely increase in demand generally noticed during this phase. At the same time, there is no denying the fact that Apple has started feeling the pressure - in the tablet market from Android tablets which are much lower priced and in the smartphone market where it has lost the crown to the Galaxy S lineup of smartphones from Samsung. In its report, Samsung said that the global sales of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones had topped 100 million since the first model was launched in May 2010. The Galaxy S3, launched last May, sold more than 40 million in seven months.

Predictions of analysts project Samsung increasing its sales by a third this year and reach a number of 290 million. They also feel that it is time for the company to decide whether to keep catering to the high end of the phone market by reaping higher profits from relatively few sales, or to offer something which is cheaper and stands a chance when competing with other lower-cost alternatives especially the ones from Samsung. Having noted all these points , it is going to be interesting to know the exact figures when the quarter results are out. So the shareholders, in an ideal sense, should not get carried away by the news of a reduction in the ordering of the screens by roughly half. The last quarter sales included only nine days of the iPhone 5 launch and the actual sales number coming from the quarter ending December should provide a better indication of the actual results.

From the developers’ perspective, iOS still is the preferred platform. With its attractive features . Apple provides a very stable, exclusive platform for app developers, clearly specifying tools, defining both their potential and boundaries. This makes it much easier for the iOS developers to proceed with the task which they have at hand. The OS uses Apple’s Objective-C language, which can be used by app developers who are already familiar with C and C++. The popularity of iOS automatically means a lot of opportunity of the developers to earn good money. Paid apps seems to be the obvious option but interestingly free apps also put forth a similar opportunities. One can, for example market advertisements space within your apps to companies and make money every time there is a click on them. Another way is to generate income by means of free apps is by only offering trial versions and giving individuals enough to play with to be wanting more, but not too much to get them to play the demo consistently. The last way is to create a very addictive app and wait for the time when its usage has peaked and follow it with another one.

Will Windows Phone 8 Make It ?

The share of Windows Phone 8 is about 2% compared to Android which is the leader at 52% market share followed by iOS at 35% . New languages are getting added to Windows Phone 8 by Microsoft at a brisk pace. The number of supported languages stands at 50 now. The virtual keyboard is also localized for all 50 WP8 languages. The variants depend on the territory. For e.g., the English keyboard is different if you use the US version compared to the UK keyboard. Unlike WP7 which supports 6, WP8 now supports 15 languages for its voice recognition feature. With simple languages, for the phone to display interfaces and menus, adding is quiet straightforward. However, for the complex language the effort lies in achieving a quality translation. Some even require engineering work to be done in the operating system itself. The most challenging languages to handle are the ones which flow from right to left & to handle it in an appropriate manner, the engineers have used an approach which they have termed as mirroring.

While issues like lack of apps, disappointing multi-tasking and poor notification system kept Windows Phone from reaching feature parity with iOS and Android, the first of the reasons seems to be a bane for Windows Phone 8 .Microsoft has invested untold millions into their PR push for WP8. Needless to say people, even if they have not purchased one yet, easily recognize these devices & are aware and consider it to be a third alternative beyond iOS & android. Realizing the fact that there needs to be some effort put in to increase the number of apps made available to the users, Microsoft has its full staff on-hand throughout the holiday period so that developers can keep submitting their apps. This has been done to maintain the certification processing turnaround times. They have announced that since its launch, in late Oct 2012, there has been a steady 40% increase in app submission.

There are several features which Microsoft has added which has helped in the traction it has started gaining with WP 8 . Sharing the core components across Windows 8, Windows RT, and WP 8 has resulted in giving users a consistent experience & allowed developers to write code once & use it on multiple platforms. This also enables hardware manufactures get products to the market much faster. The
Windows phone app development kit has brought in a lot of developer interest in the platform. The user interface design also seems excellent. The use of tiles, clean fonts, the extensive choice of colors & the prerogative it offers the users to make the home page tailored to one’s own requirement seems to have created quite a positive impact in the minds of people. Microsoft understands it quite well that to become a strong contender & to be looked upon as a valid alternative for the users, the app numbers have to go up. In order to encourage more developer participation, the rewards being offered are better than the competitors.

If you have the idea of a brilliant app or are looking for a reliable offshore partner for your Windows Phone 8 development services, we are ideally suited, given our exposure and expertise, to meet your requirements.

Microsoft unification effort across devices shows up in Windows 8

Although Google's Android and Apple's iPhone devices currently dominate the smartphone market, there is strong optimism, if one were to go by Steve Ballmer CEO Microsoft statements, about Windows Phone growing fast to become a strong third participant. In order to get the volumes to grow fast tie-ups have been made with Nokia, Samsung, HTC and many others. Microsoft is expected to, going by the reports, to invest more in marketing and advertising around Windows 8 than it has ever historically done for any of its products before. This is primarily because it wants to unify Windows Phone devices, PCs, Windows 8 tablets and its Xbox game console. The biggest benefit of such an ecosystem is the consistency that it brings; avoiding in the process the need to relearn how to navigate. This is precisely the reason why one notices the modern visual style i.e. Metro featuring tiles across all its products. The tiles allow the users to get a glimpse of mails, weather forecasts, photos, media items, web pages and other information. The apps need not be opened for the same. Tiles can be "live," which means they flip around automatically to show new information. Also, the users can decide which ones are to be updated with live information. Another interesting concept is that of “Hubs” i.e. places where content, apps, and social networking, all come together. A Photo Hub for instance would enable one to see one’s own and friends’ galleries and have access to some photo-editing apps. Thus WP8 comes across as a very good option to be used as a smartphone for a lot of calling, texting, and social networking. Besides, the start screen feature makes it more customizable that any other android or iOS handset.

Part of the reason given for Windows Phone 7 not providing the results as was expected or not standing in comparison to iOS and Android because of the hardware which it was running on. However the problem seems to be addressed with Windows Phone 8. Underneath the familiar interface of the earlier version, WP8 runs on the same kernel as Windows 8, including the NTFS file system. The hardware is at par with iOS and Android devices in terms of screen resolutions, computing power, cameras and the ability to take advantage of advanced network bandwidth known as LTE. The biggest change to
Windows Phone 8 development India is the new kernel, which allows Windows Phones to have dual-core processors. On the development side, rather than having to use Silverlight or XNA, third-party developers can write native code. All the WP7 apps is still compatible but the overall offering has much more potential and powerful because it offers more ways of develop apps. The problem though however is that MS did not release the SDK to the developers beforehand. However, Cross-platform development frameworks such as Apache Cordova, Sencha Touch and Xamarin.Mobile are all compatible with Windows Phone 8 with users of Sencha Touch in particular being bullish about Microsoft's new OS.

Windows Phone 8 surely would fall into category of OS which is very high on aesthetics based on the range of interesting features which it offers. Ultimately, to stand in competition against Android and iOS, it will need apps. But there is no doubt about the fact that it offers a good third alternative to consumers and is a big step in the right direction.

Windows Phone 8 Developer Numbers Increase By 40%

According to Microsoft Technologies, 2012 has proven to be a very good year for Windows Phone and its developers. During this period, over 75,000 new apps were published in the store and more than 300,000 app updates got submitted across the year. This results make it about 54 apps, on an average, getting downloaded on every phone. On of the primary factors to have worked is the expansion of the payment options for users. Working hard at implementing alternative payment methods such as Paypal, Alipay and carrier billing seems to have done the trick. This has resulted in developer revenue increasing by 40% since the launch of their Windows Phone 8 SDK. There has also been a phenomenal 95% increase in the number of potential customers with the launch of Windows Phone 8 across 191 markets ; this was earlier restricted to only 35. Out of the total of 150,000 apps now, the Windows Phone Store published about half i.e. 75,000 apps in the last one year. Although it is still far away from Apple’s whopping 740,000 apps , it is the rate at which apps have got published which should be encouraging . Also, in the process it has overtaken Blackberry by a good margin already. ( Blackberry’s App World has some 90,000 apps ).MS has also made it possible this year to share their concerns about an app or a game. With Bing powering the searches & with the addition of Smart lists, it has become much easier to locate a relevant app. Further enhancements have also been made like the new collections and recommendations for WP8 customers.

In the first 30 days of the SDK release, there has already been a 40 percent increase in month-over-month developer. Microsoft has scaled up its resources to handle a large influx of developer submissions. Efforts also are being put for die hard WP 7 users. They are supposed to receive the WP 7.8 update with a new start screen & some 10 new themes in addition to many new apps. Inspite of all the efforts, industry analysts have shared what they feel is a major concern. According to them, Microsoft has yet not promised its users the availability of the latest and the greatest apps with the best features first. Irrespective of the number of apps available in the store if the commonly used ones are missing, then it will become increasingly difficult to consider WP8 smartphones as an alternative to IPhone and other Android counterparts. The current Windows Phone Marketplace has no Pandora, No Instagram, a Facebook app which does not have the latest features and a Twitter app which has not been updated for a long time. Besides all this, the preferred choice to launch new apps is on iPhone first followed by Android. So in addition to having to clear the backlog , & do it really fast, they also will have to draw the attention of the
Windows Phone 8 Developers as an alternative platform to launch their new apps.

Many analysts feel that there has never been a better time for Windows Phone or its developers since there is so much at hand which needs to be done. Microsoft is also doing its bit to woo them. If you sense this as an opportunity and have some brilliant app ideas in mind, we can be your preferred partner to develop them. Mindfire Solutions has years of experience of having executed numerous projects on Windows Mobile Operating system and on devices ranging from Pocket PCs to Smartphones. Our expertise goes from mobile apps development from Windows CE operating system to Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Phone 7.0.
